Views and Vistas training opportunity

Developing research skills using Bath Record Office – Monday 28th July, 1pm

The Bathscape Views and Vista’s project aims to engage volunteers in researching and monitoring viewpoints to maintain historically important views and vistas and, where appropriate, achieve improved land management to restore or enhance them.

We’d really like some more help to research, photograph and record some of your favourite views. As part of this, and with the support of knowledgeable Bath Record Office colleagues, we are offering this half day in-person training session aimed at beginners.

The training will introduce us to Bath Record Office: Archives and Local Studies including what records are available and how to access them. We’ll work through how to research a view together and will be introduced to a range of Record Office sources including photographs, maps, newspaper archives, historic planning applications and aerial photographs.

So, if you’re new/newish to research, and would like to gain confidence and skills in using the collections in Bath Record Office, have an interest in views of Bath, and might like to get involved by sharing a researched view with us, please do book a place and come along to this training session – Book here or get in touch info@bathscape.co.uk

We’re really pleased to be supporting this year’s Big BaNES 100k!  The Big BaNES 100k is a flexible outdoor challenge raising funds for two brilliant local youth charities: Mentoring Plus and Off the Record.

After supporting the wellbeing walk in May to help launch this year’s challenge, we’re excited to be joining as official partners alongside Walk Bath.

So, what’s The Big BaNES 100k all about?

* Walk, run, cycle, swim — or do it your own way to reach 100km by 26th September
* Fundraise as you go to support Mentoring Plus and Off the Record Bath & NES
* Take part solo or as a team — it’s up to you!

The Big BaNES 100k is part of a wider collaboration between Mentoring Plus, Off the Record, and The Bath 5k Map — helping improve community wellbeing through nature while raising vital funds for youth mental health.

So far, over £15,000 has been raised!  Looking for inspiration? Check out the ‘Explore‘ page of our website for some fab walking trails to help you in the challenge.

Latest listening opportunity – Footprints Podcast

In July’s podcast we explore Bath’s industrial past and the changes in the landscape Bath has seen over the decades, since many of the factories have disappeared.

We meet Peter Dunn, apprentice of Stothert and Pitt, Bath’s ‘Crane maker to the World’, and responsible for restoring one of their oldest cranes, which now sits outside Newarks Works. We also meet writer and local historian Paul Fisher to talk about Bath’s furniture manufacturing history and the modernist buildings which housed them. We start at Lidl and walk over to the Hermann Miller building on the city side of the river. We also find out from Steve George what kinds of considerations are needed when deciding what can and should be built in this wonderful UNESCO World Heritage city.

Find the latest episode or catch up on any you’ve missed or would like to revisit at: https://footprints.captivate.fm/ or search “Bathscape Footprints” wherever you normally get your podcasts.

Huge thanks as always to our contributors and our podcast producer, Pommy Harmar.
